Equipment

  • Heatproof glass or mug
  • Small saucepan or microwave-safe cup for heating coffee, if needed
  • Whisk or hand mixer for whipped cream
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Lighter or long matches optional, for the flaming version

Ingredients

  • ¾ Cup Freshly brewed strong coffee
  • 1 oz Dark rum or substitute spiced rum if preferred or substitute spiced rum if preferred
  • ½ oz Coffee liqueur (e.g., Kahlúa or Tía María)
  • 1 Tsp Sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
  • Whipped cream (homemade or store-bought), for topping
  • Ground cinnamon or grated nutmeg for garnish

Instructions

  • Prepare the Glass
Warm your glass by filling it with hot water for a minute, then pour out the water. This step ensures your drink stays hot for longer.
  • Optional Flaming Step
For a dramatic touch, carefully ignite the rum in the glass using a lighter or long match. Let it burn briefly (5-10 seconds), then extinguish the flame by slowly pouring the hot coffee. Skip this step if preferred—it's delicious either way!
  • Mix the Base
Pour the freshly brewed coffee into the warmed glass. Stir in the sugar (if using), dark rum, and coffee liqueur until well combined.
  • Add the Topping
Generously top the drink with whipped cream. A thick dollop is ideal as it will slowly melt into the coffee, enhancing the flavor.
  • Garnish and Serve
Sprinkle a pinch of ground cinnamon or grated nutmeg over the whipped cream for an aromatic finishing touch. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • Coffee Strength Matters: Use a robust dark roast or espresso for the best flavor.
  • Rum Choices: Dark rum adds a rich depth, while spiced rum can infuse the drink with festive notes.
  • Whipped Cream Hack: No whisk? Pour heavy cream into a mason jar, seal it, and shake vigorously until it thickens.
  • Adjust Sweetness: Start with a small amount of sugar since the coffee liqueur is already sweet. Add more to taste if needed.
